Writing

Purpose of the IELTS Writing test is to assess a wide range of writing skills, including how well an aspirant can write anappropriate response; organise ideas; and use a range of correct vocabulary and grammar. There are two different versions of IELTS writing viz. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The assessment objective and hence the subject matter of the two types of tests is different. To some aspirants academic writing is applicable while to some general training writing. Academic Writing

IELTS Academic writing generally involves two tasks. Our trainers provide more than adequate training of both the tasks. Whatever the task is, it must be remembered one must write complete paragraphs and writing in bullet points attracts penalty. The answers must be written within the word limit of 150 words or 250 words, as the case may be.

First type of task in academic writing is to describe some visual information.

In this case, some visual information is provided in the form of a graph, a table, a chart, or a diagram. The candidates are supposed to describe the given information in their own words. The description should be written in a formal (academic) or a semi-formal style. One must include the most crucial and relevant aspects, given in the diagram. They must not be skipped while some minor points or details may be left out.

Second type of task in academic writing is to respond to an argument or a point of view or a problem.

For completing this task of writing there is no standard format or writing pattern. This task requires the candidate to write answers keeping in mind the relevance and coherence.A candidate must ensure that s/he read the task very carefully and provide a response which is most suitable and relevant. For instance, the task is to write on a particular aspect of health and fitness, then the candidate should provide an answer which focusses on that very particular aspect of health and fitness rather than writing a general essay on health and fitness. This is what makes IELTS writing different from school/college writing. Some school or college examination boards may become liberal and yet award some marks for writing a general content. But the candidates are penalized for writing irrelevant answers. Relevance to the topic is an essential component of this task in IELTS writing. General Training Writing

IELTS General Training writing generally also involves two tasks.

First type of task in General Training writing is to respond to a situationor explain a situation.

The key objective of the task in IELTS writing is to assess a candidate’s ability to use correct and appropriate language; to organise and combineinformation coherently and cohesively; and to follow English letter-writing conventions.For this purpose, the candidates are presented with a situation and they are supposed to write a personal response to this situation, which can be in the form of a formal, semi-formal or informal letter.

The difficulty level is not so rigorous in case of general training writing as it is in case of academic writing. The candidates are required to write about everyday situations. This may include writing to a college administration officer about some admin related problems,writing to anestate manager or renting agency to get some problems resolved related to gas supply in the house, etc. Our expert trainers provide excellent guidance to the IELTS aspirants in choosing an appropriate style of writing. Second type of task in General Training writing is to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

The goal of this task is to evaluate the ability of the candidates to use correct and appropriateEnglish language while writing a discursive essay.A discursive essay requiresthe test taker to present arguments either for the topic or against the topic. However, some discursive essays also require the test taker to present both the sides in a balanced manner or present her/his own views and opinions on that subject matter.English discursive writing conventions -writing style, appropriate start and finish, order of information, forming paragraphs -have to be taken care of. The test takers must organise and link information cohesively and coherently.The answers have to be precise and relevant.
